- Surface Duo 2 ‘Not Available’ to Consumers or Businesses on Microsoft.com
- Local Best Buy stores have also started removing Surface Duo 2 kiosks, with limited availability remaining
- But the Surface Duo 3 is Not Expected for this year
- Microsoft may wait until Android 12L is released to ship re-flashed devices
Microsoft’s Surface Duo 2 – which is about to receive the Android 12L update – is almost impossible to find in some markets, especially the US.
Reports of limited stock started at Best Buy weeks ago, and local stores removed the unique Surface Duo 2 kiosk, which advertised the device and let people play with the devices in person.
Microsoft.com, for consumers and businesses, is also out of stock Surface Duo 2s for sale. When potential customers press Configure, the button is ineffective for consumers. Surface Duo 2 is also listed as “out of stock” and cannot be purchased on the Surface for Business website.
Usually, this is where the speculation about a the new Surface Duo starts. Microsoft usually has “Surface events” in New York City in the fall, announcing refreshments to its lineup, often with big improvements, and sometimes brand-new Surface devices.
This timing corresponds to “Surface Duo 3.” the new.
However, our Senior Windows correspondent Zac Bowden says there is no Surface Duo 3 due this fall. Instead, Microsoft is focusing on existing software support and improvements for both the Surface Duo and Surface Duo 2, including the introduction of Android 12L.
There are also reports that Microsoft is weighing the process of converting the Surface Duo from a two-screen device to a foldable one like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 or, more likely, the new Xiaomi Mix Fold 2.
At just 5.4 mm thick, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 is 0.1 mm thinner than the Surface Duo 2. This device also folds without a gap with minimal crease and packs a large 4,500 mAh battery, making it a convenient form factor that meets the standards of Surface. .
But such a device from Microsoft isn’t expected until October 2023 at the earliest, making the Surface Duo 2 the primary phone, especially since the Surface Duo 2 “Light” was canceled.
Surface Duo 2: What’s really going on?
If I had to guess, what most likely happens is that Microsoft is letting the current stock run out until Android 12L is finished.
An Android 12L update for both the Surface Duo and Surface Duo 2 is expected in the coming months, possibly tied for October, when Microsoft makes big announcements.
It’s rare for a company to sell a hardware product that has to pull a significant OS update that completely changes the hardware, out of the box and during setup. This is also why OEMs release software when products are released, for example, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 ships with Android 12L.
The current retail boxes of the Surface Duo 2 are flashed with Android 11, and logistically it doesn’t make sense to call all those shipments from vendors and warehousing, ship them back, unlock, re-flash Android 12L, repack, and reship for sale.
Once we’re out of stock with Android 11, Microsoft can make another small boot for the Surface Duo 2, but with Android 12L installed out of the box. There may be a new commercial push for the Surface Duo 2 with Android 12L because the device is in a much better place than its initial launch.
Microsoft will also have the opportunity to make minor changes or improvements to the hardware. However, we have not heard of this happening. (Hopefully we’ll see more hardware, if it’s for warranty exchanges and replacements likely to happen over the next year or two.)
Of course, this may already be the end of the Surface Duo 2, and we will no longer see it on sale.
We’ve reached out to Microsoft to see if the company will restock its Store and affiliate partners. We will update this article accordingly.
