R Balki has proven time and time again that when it comes to ideas, he is one of the most authentic storytellers in Bollywood. His films, Cheeni Kum, Shamitabh, Ki & Ka, Paa have fresh ideas. His films may have been a bit ridiculous but none of them can be forgotten. R Balki’s latest movie, Chup is about a serial killer who hunts down deceptive reviewers. The timing of the movie is perfect. We’ve seen how movie critics are dissected by audiences on social media after every Friday release. The film uses legendary Bollywood director Guru Dutt as a metaphor for the great effect. Is Chup worth 2 hours plus runtime at the box office? Is it worth watching? Read the full review below…

What about…
Mumbai police are on alert after the killing of two of its critics in consecutive weeks. They search for a serial killer who targets deceptive critics and fail to make a movie feel. Danny, a reclusive florist, lives a double life – one as a diligent gardener who grows tulips in Mumbai, and the other as a fan and successor to Guru Dutt. The cult classic Kaagaz Ke Phool which critics panned upon release found many references in Chup. We won’t discuss the story further because we want people to see it in theaters.

what hot…
Chup belongs to the Dulquer Salmaan. The beloved is on his way this year. After giving an amazing performance as Lieutenant Ram in Sita Ramam, he did another stellar act as Danny/Sebastian Gomez. His performance as a serial killer hated by dishonest, insensitive critics is cunning and for the most part effective. Dulquer Salmaan is brilliant in the climax as he showcases ‘idealism’, pain, anger, and madness with the same fervor. It’s like icing on a cake. Shreya Dhanwanthary brings a sense of seriousness as a film reporter who passionately loves the world of cinema. Sunny Deol is good but has very limited ability. Pooja Bhatt as a clinical criminal psychologist overshadowed his small but flamboyant role. Sarania Bonavan as Neela’s modern mother (Shriya Dhanwanthari) is a shout-out. After Dulquer Salmaan, the film’s two main stars are cinematography and music. Vishal Sinha did an excellent job. It makes you fall in love with the magic of cinema in Mumbai all over again. At the same time, the tires are painful, sad and disturbing, although not bloody per se. Given that Chup is a poem by Guru Dutt, he uses some techniques adopted by the legend himself. Amit Trivedi’s music also raises the film a few notches. Songs from Kaagaz Ke Phool like Yeh Duniya Agar are very much used. The poignant words strike a chord even in the film set in the contemporary setting. Finally, the whole concept of the movie is new and untouched before in Bollywood. R Balki deserves applause for being original at a time when people preferred what was tried and tested (read new releases).

why not…
If you’re excited to watch thinking it’s going to be a thrilling, kick-ass murder investigative movie, you’ll be very disappointed. While the movie moves on with this narrative, the gist of the movie is something else entirely. Also, the plot feels very comfortably designed in some places, particularly the serial killer’s abusive back story. Sunny Deol is good but don’t expect too many signature moments from Chop. Nela and Danny’s love story is also a bit incomplete especially in the beginning. But these are some small gaps given the immersive story and great acting from Dulquer Salmaan.

BL . judgment
A must see Chup in theaters. You’ll fall in love with Vishal Sinha’s cinematography, you’ll fall in love with Dulquer Salmaan and walk out of the hall with a number of ideas about art, “official verification” from critics, if it’s the audience that really makes a movie if the artists seek too much of the former. R Balki’s charming movie despite its flaws makes you do it all with flair.
