Brendan Fraser says transforming into a 600-pound man in “Whale” has taken a toll on him.

Fraser, 53, plays Charlie, a reclusive English teacher who is nearing the end of his life. About a month after filming, the film’s director, Darren Aronofsky, said the actor was “all pedal and no gas.”

“I was upset – it could have been a failure,” Fraser said in an interview with Vanity Fair. Darren said, ‘We’ll go back and do this tomorrow. You have reached the climax. ‘ He said, ‘This is happening – it has reached its climax.’

Fraser, who hasn’t played any major roles in over a decade, said he wanted to fully immerse himself in Charlie’s character and become “unknown.”

“If there is no danger, why bother?” Fraser said. “I want to learn from the people I’m working with at this point in my career. I’ve had such variety, and a lot of highs and lows, so what I make sure, in the second half of my time doing in this, is to feel like I I contribute to the craft and am learning from it. This is an excellent opportunity. I wanted to disappear into it. I hoped I would become unrecognizable.”
