Some iOS 16 users are complaining about slow spotlight searching and battery drain

It’s been nine days since Apple released iOS 16 to the public, bringing major changes to the Lock screen, Messages, Maps, and more. In the days following the release, some users encountered various issues on their iPhones, ranging from slow system performance to battery drain.

In the past few days, iPhone 14 Pro users have been sharing certain bugs related to Apple’s latest high-end iPhone, including camera shake, iMessage activation issues, FaceTime, and more. However, there are other issues affecting the broader group of iOS 16 users, and we’ve compiled two issues based on user reports below.

Abnormal battery drain

After performing a major iOS update, it is normal for your iPhone to drain battery life faster while performing indexing and background tasks; However, some users via Twitter, the Mac rumors Forums (1 and 2) and Reddit (1,2) are reporting excessive battery drain days after an update.

Wow, iOS 16 is buggy. It completely ruined my battery life in my 13 Pro. Now I have a 14 Pro and everything seems fine, had great battery life, and I now have terrible battery life today. Such as the estimated 4.5-5 hours of SOT. And now, out of nowhere, my phone is starting to get really hot. what is going on??? Apple please fix this mess.

Other users have reported an improvement in battery life compared to iOS 15, so the overall experience is somewhat mixed. Apple recently admitted that enabling haptic feedback on the keyboard in iOS 16 could drain battery life, so users with battery drain can try turning that off if they enable it. If you still have battery issues, see our explanation.

Slow search in the spotlight

The most notable issue facing iOS 16 users is the slow performance of Spotlight search. Users reported that Spotlight sometimes takes up to 10 seconds to load results on ‌iOS 16‌ and sometimes doesn’t load at all. Many users on Reddit (1,2) and Mac rumors Forum topics (1,2) share their experiences:

I have the same problem. Before iOS 15.6 the search was instant, but when I updated to iOS 15.6 the search became very slow, taking more than 5 seconds for anything to appear during the search. I was hoping iOS 16 would fix the problem, but it’s very slow. I even wiped the phone and restored it from iCloud backup, hoping to fix it. you did not.
So Apple, please fix this problem in the next update. It’s very annoying and I don’t want to lose all network settings because of this.

I use phone search to quickly pull up apps that I’ve hidden or that are several screens away. When I swipe down and type to search, it sometimes takes more than 10 seconds for apps to start appearing in the search. They used to be almost instantaneous. For example, if you start typing MAP, Apple Maps, Google Maps, etc., it will appear as a result. Has anyone else noticed this massive slowdown?

For this specific bug, many users said that resetting all settings greatly improved Spotlight search performance, but Apple hasn’t released an official solution and/or bug fix.

The new iOS 16 update is coming next week

Apple has confirmed that it is aware of some issues users are experiencing, including camera shake in the latest ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌‌, and has promised to update iOS 16 next week. The update, which will likely be iOS 16.0.2, will include a fix for camera issues, an annoying copy-and-paste prompt, and iMessage and FaceTime‌ activation. The update could also address other issues that users feel, such as the inclusion of battery drain and slow Spotlight search.
